TAX-FREE weekend shopping tips...some do's and don't for this weekend. All the rules and info you need to know
Friday 08-03-2012 2:39pm CT

The tax-free savings applies to the following items:

  • Clothing under $100
  • School supplies under $50
  • Books under $30
  • Computers/computer equipment under $750

Try shopping around at different stores to compare prices and look for coupons that you can apply to your purchases, as well. Both of these tasks can be accomplished online without even leaving home. Just go to the web sites of the stores where you most frequently shop.

However, be careful not to overspend just because the tax holiday is going on in your area. The regular sales tax rate in Alabama is only 4%, so that's how much money you'd be saving - along with your local sales tax, if applicable. By shopping around, and also using coupons, you might find that the items you're looking for are less expensive either before the tax free weekend or after it takes place.

Keep in mind, too, that not all cities and counties are planning to participate in the event this year. For example, Greensboro and Hamilton are, but Glenwood and White Hall are not. To be on the safe side, make sure that you refer to the list of participating cities and counties in Alabama before you go shopping.

Deadbeat Dad in Gordo thinks he will meet Jennifer Aniston but meets Gordo Cops instead. :)

Get ready to hear about one of the best ruses ever. Deadbeat dad Joshua Garlathy dodged his child-support payments for more than a decade before bounty hunter Scott Bernstein tracked him down in Hawaii. But how to get Garlathy to return to Pennsylvania and face the courts? Bernstein tricked Garlathy into thinking he'd scored the role of "Dirty Nick" in "Banished from Brooklyn," a rom-com about bank robbers starring Jennifer Aniston. If Garlathy knew how to use IMDb.com, he'd know there is no such film. Instead, he was arrested after he flew in for his big acting break and has now been ordered to cough up $32,000 in back payments. We have a feeling Garlathy will be firmly in Team Angelina from now on.  Ok, it was New York rather than Gordo but still it's funny!!! :)

Save money this weekend and get prepared for severe weather at the same time!
Thursday 07-05-2012 12:02pm CT

TUSCALOOSA | Alabamians can take advantage of a statewide sales tax holiday this weekend to purchase items related to severe weather preparedness.

The exemption on sales taxes for select items, such as batteries, tarps, weather radios and portable generators, begins at 12:01 a.m. Friday and ends Sunday at midnight.

About 250 counties and municipalities around the state, including Tuscaloosa County, Tuscaloosa and Northport, have joined in the tax holiday. For consumers in Tuscaloosa and Northport, that will mean savings of 9 percent (4 percent state, 2 percent in the two cities and 3 percent county) on the exempted merchandise.

“I am hopeful that this sales tax holiday will encourage families to think about their severe weather plans and make sure they have the items they need to weather any storm,” said state Rep. Bill Poole, R-Tuscaloosa.

Carrie Underwood has advice for Parents being positive & 3 EASY beauty tips for Guys and Girls! :)

OR

"If I could go back and talk to my 15-year-old self I'd be like, 'Seriously, listen to your mom,'" she told People. "Drink more water, put more sunscreen on, moisturize. There are a lot of people like me who wish they did more."

The country singer swears that simplicity is the key to letting natural beauty shine through. "I don't have time for complicated. I don't have space in my luggage for twenty things that do different things for my skin -- I don't know anyone who does."

Underwood is proof that a little positivity can go a long way. "My mom is a great example to me and my sisters, she's just the best," said the stage star. "If I ever had one of those days when it's like, 'I don’t feel so great about myself,' she'd always tell me, 'You're beautiful, you're funny, you sing well.' She was always a positive person in my life, which is important. People need more positive influences."

Tuscaloosa teen kills man during hit and run incident, then MOM makes her turn herself in to police!!!
Monday 05-07-2012 1:53pm CT

This is a story of a Tuscaloosa MOM...Doing the right thing!!!!  It's a sad story that contains a lesson about doing the right thing! Here's more from the Tuscaloosa News Team!

A 71-year-old pedestrian was killed Saturday night in a hit and run accident on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, according to the Tuscaloosa Metro Homicide Unit.

A 19-year-old female was driving a four-door, dark gray Toyota Corolla and had two other teenage passengers in the car. The pedestrian, Andrew Lee Perkins, was walking on the sidewalk but stepped off the sidewalk and onto the roadway. He was struck by the Corolla's right front side.

The driver continued driving and drove to McKenzie Court, where they met one of the passenger's mothers, who drove them back to the scene of the accident. The Corolla was taken by police as evidence.

The Tuscaloosa Police Department's Accident Reconstruction Unit was contacted and responded to the scene. The homicide unit was also notified. All parties were interviewed and have been released pending further investigation. No alcohol nor any illegal substances appeared to have been a contributing factor to the accident, either by the driver or the passengers in the vehicle.
